Inflation is the EU's harmonised index (HICP), the measure the ECB targets; the National Statistical Institute headlines its national CPI, which can differ by a few tenths. The series is shown from 2000: the late 1990s carry the tail of Bulgaria's 1997 hyperinflation, with annual rates in the hundreds of percent. Bulgaria joined the euro on 1 January 2026 and has had no policy rate of its own since: the rate shown is the European Central Bank's deposit facility rate, from that date. Before 2026 the lev was tied to the euro under a currency board run by the Bulgarian National Bank, which is not shown.
